Interview date: 6.10.13
This podcast is part two of last week's interview with Melissa Sawyer, Executive Director of the Youth Empowerment Project (YEP). This week, Melissa introduces, Darrin McCall, Director of YEP's Work and Learn Center. The Work and Learn Center teaches young people both soft and hard skills. The Center operates on a 12-week cycle and participants meet twice a week. Examples of some of the soft skills include interview skills and goal setting. In the current 12-week cycle, Darrin is teaching bike repair, while during the next cycle he will focus on woodworking. Darrin points out that the goals of these courses are not necessarily to create professional bicycle repairers or carpenters, but for some of the skills the young people acquire during these sessions to translate into other disciplines. As he points out: "The goal is to make more employable young people. " YEP and the Work and Learn Center are confident in the belief that hope is on the horizon for the future of New Orleans' struggling youth; listen to learn more about this valuable, hands-on organization.
